I know you aren't a huge comic fan so what I'm going to say may or may not change your opinion of the use of the character Miranda in DKR. From my memory of how the League of Shadows works each of the members/ninjas are supposed to live a very unassuming/unremarkable life when they are not "active". (For gamers out there, essentially the LOS is set up like the Assassins in Assassins Creed but more secretive) Because of this the viewers' emotional disconnect with the Miranda character seemed appropriate to me. I do admit I would have preferred more camera time with Marion Cotillard, but that's purely a selfish desire because I really like her as an actress(and she is hella hot). I think Nolan used the character very well given the parameters of Batman's/Wayne's lengthy departure from the public I wouldn't have expected he depict a long love interest between the two. It makes even more sense when you consider the character's actual purpose for showing up in Bruce's life is purely to get the "in" with Wayne Industries. You would have to be powerful enough to be considered for a meeting but maintain this guise in such a way that Wayne (and Lucius as well) would have no reason to look more intensely at your character's background. That's why I honestly feel like the Miranda/Thalia character was done very very skillfully. You, and many others, have said it well. You basically don't give a damn about Miranda untill you find out she is actually Thalia.
