I miss the brick and mortar video stores as well, renting from a machine or online just isn't the same. I still know of two mom & pop video rental stores, one in a rural town and another in a decent size city. The rural one operates out of the basement of someone's home, kind of strange but their business seems to be thriving even with 3 redbox kiosks down the street. The urban one has relocated three times, downsizing each time and I can't see them lasting much longer. I never rent from either of these stores but do buy used often so they will be missed.
To add, I did a lot of shopping during the closing of Hollywood video/Movie gallery stores back in 2010 that I now have lots of DVDs on my shelf with those red alpha stickers on the spine, so in a way when I look at my collection I feel like I bought a franchise to keep Hollywood Video alive (i just wish they would've sold me the large sign on the building!)
Family Video is more than a midwest chain BTW, they've got east coast stores as well. I live in NY and there's a store about an hour and a half away, I've been there once (sightseeing trip lol) they seemed to use an older video store model which works. I read some place that they outlived the other "big boys" because they actually own every location (saving on lease costs) as well as having competitive pricing. I wish they'd open a store closer, I would definitely rent from them!
